Free RTC bus, 8 G Gold: Can Vijay Really Do It In Tamil Nadu?

Actor turned politician Vijay has announced a series of welfare promises aimed at women as part of the manifesto of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The announcements were made during a recent party event and quickly drew attention across Tamil Nadu.

According to Vijay, the party plans to introduce a monthly financial assistance of ₹2500 for women to support household expenses. In addition, the manifesto promises the supply of six LPG cylinders per year to eligible families in order to reduce the burden of rising cooking gas prices.

One of the most discussed proposals is the promise of providing 8 grams of gold for women at the time of marriage. The party also announced that newborn baby girls will receive a gold ring as a welfare benefit. These proposals are being positioned as measures to support women during key stages of life.

The manifesto also promises free bus travel for women across Tamil Nadu. Similar schemes already exist in some states, and TVK says it will expand such benefits if it comes to power. The party further stated that free sanitary napkins will be distributed to promote menstrual hygiene.

Another key promise is the creation of a separate government department focused entirely on women’s welfare and development. Vijay said the goal is to strengthen financial independence, healthcare access, and social security for women across the state.

These announcements mark one of the first major policy outlines from TVK as it prepares for upcoming political battles in Tamil Nadu. But the real question is whether Tamil Nadu has the financial resources to fulfil these promises made by Vijay today.
