Volkswagen happens to be one of the biggest automobile manufacturers in the world, and they have a lot of dominating presence in the Indian manufacturing space as well. The company has thousands of employees in India along with its global operations.

But now the latest developments are suggesting that this massive automobile manufacturing giant is preparing for a significant layoff operation.

Apparently, Volkswagen is contemplating the idea of cutting 12% of its human workforce in India, which would mean that they would be firing thousands of individuals.

Volkswagen Group’s India operations are reportedly planning to eliminate around 12% of the workforce as part of an accelerated three-year restructuring. But this isn’t just about reducing headcount.

The bigger question is whether Volkswagen is preparing for a major reset of its India strategy and ownership structure before the next investment cycle.

The company wants a leaner cost base before launching its next generation of vehicles, including a new EV, while expanding local engineering and positioning India as a manufacturing, engineering and export hub.

This comes shortly after Volkswagen has communicated that they would be firing more than one lakh jobs globally, and it appears that a few thousand of these will be from India too.

It is sad to see the human workforce, which has been one of the hard-working capitals and taxpaying bracket of the population facing such a situation due to the AI alignment.
