He recently discussed how people in the Hindi film industry can come under pressure from powerful individuals and why it becomes difficult for them to step back after making certain compromises.
During a conversation with Janice Sequeira, Anurag Kashyap explained that people may not always make these choices because they want to. According to him, the trouble can begin with a single decision. Once a person agrees to something and receives benefits in return, saying no later can become very difficult.
The filmmaker compared this situation to opening a door that is hard to close again. He suggested that one agreement can lead to more compromises because the benefits attached to the first decision make it difficult for people to change their position.
Anurag also said that many people in the industry understand what is happening. They may feel uncomfortable or even embarrassed about the compromises they have made. However, they may still feel that they cannot easily leave the situation.
The filmmaker also spoke about the difference between Bollywood and the film industries in southern India. He believes strong regional identities and local cultures give the South industries a different kind of strength.
According to Anurag, southern film industries are also less dependent on the Hindi-speaking market. He feels this reduces the pressure to make certain compromises to reach Hindi audiences.
His comments have once again started a discussion about how power and influence work inside the film industry. Bollywood has often been criticised for having strong networks where connections and influence can play an important role in professional opportunities.
Anurag Kashyap has been known for making films that are different from mainstream Bollywood cinema. He has also regularly spoken about the challenges faced by filmmakers and artists in the industry.
