Oscar-winning music composer A R Rahman has finally spoken about the controversy that started after his recent comments on the Hindi film industry. Rahman was criticised online after he mentioned that work opportunities in Bollywood have reduced for him in recent years and that there could be a “communal thing” involved.

After facing strong reactions, Rahman shared a video message on social media to clarify his views. In the video, he made it clear that he never wanted to hurt anyone’s feelings. He said, "Dear friends, music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating and honouring a culture. India is my inspiration, my teacher and my home."

Rahman explained that music is his main way of expression and service. He added, "I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood, but my purpose has always been to uplift, honour and serve through music. I have never wished to cause pain and I hope my sincerity is felt." He also said he feels proud to be an Indian and grateful for the creative freedom the country has given him.

Talking about his journey, Rahman spoke about several projects that gave him purpose and joy. He mentioned initiatives like working with young Naga musicians, mentoring the Sunshine Orchestra, creating India’s first multicultural virtual band, and scoring Ramayana with Hans Zimmer. He said these experiences strengthened his belief in music as a positive force. Towards the end, he thanked India and said he wants to create music that "honours the past, celebrates the present and inspires the future."

The controversy began after Rahman told BBC Network that work from Bollywood has slowed for him due to “shifting power dynamics” and possibly a “communal thing.” He said, "It comes to me as Chinese whispers."

Many celebrities reacted to his comments. Writer Shobhaa De said Bollywood has always been free of communal bias. Singer Shaan said music has no religion and success depends only on work quality. Lyricist Javed Akhtar also said he never felt any communal element in the industry.
