An Afghan national who was residing here for the past four months after cheating his business partner back home to the tune of over Rs.21 lakh was nabbed, police said Saturday.

"After cheating his business partner Bashir Ahmed to the tune of Rs.21.80 lakh, accused Abdul Ghani, 30, left Afghanistan and arrived in India in August this year. He took shelter in south Delhi's Lajpat Nagar on a rented accommodation to avoid arrest," said Sanjeev Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell).

"He was arrested Tuesday from Lajpat Nagar and handed over to FRRO department for deportation to Afghanistan. He is lodged in the detention centre," said Yadav.

According to the officer, the police got information Sunday through the ministry of external affairs and the Embassy of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, New Delhi.

"The victim came to India and visited the Afghan Embassy in the capital, requesting to trace Ghani," said the Officer.

During interrogation, Ghani said he started a garments business in partnership with Ahmed in Afghanistan's Kandahar.

"Ahmed paid him Rs.21.80 lakh as investment in the business. Ghani misappropriated the amount. When he heard Ahmed was contemplating legal action, he applied for Indian visa on the pretext of medical treatment and fled his country," said the officer.

According to the officer, he worked as translator of Pashto, the national language of Afghanistan, for Afghani nationals coming for medical treatment to various hospitals in the city.
