Amazon In Plans To Take Over Single Screen Theaters
By: Tupaki Desk | 15 Dec 2020 8:56 AM GMTThe e-commerce giant Amazon has put a special focus on single screen theatres. However, Amazon is not aiming to use the theatres to screen movies but to convert them into readymade godowns.
Amazon hopes to dominate the retail sector by delivering the ordered item to the customer the fastest. For this, it was decided to take the theatres which were ready to close and prepare godowns everywhere.
Single screen theatres in Hyderabad, which were closed in March due to Covid pandemic, have not opened yet. Due to the fear that the audience may not come to the theatres, the theatre owners are not interested to reopen them. It has already been ten months since the theatres closed. Owners have already suffered a great loss due to the lockdown.
Even if the vaccine becomes available and life returns to normal a few months later, there is no guarantee that theatres will return to normalcy. Multiplex culture thrived in the city before the pandemic. In addition, the number of audiences coming to single theatres has decreased due to the influence of OTTs. This is what attracted Amazon to conquer the single screens.
Amazon has already set up its largest centre in Hyderabad for the retail market. Now, it has focused on setting up godowns locally. All single theatres are located in the most populated areas of the city. Theatres and surrounding space are also well suited for a godown or logistics centre. So, the company is offering twice as much money that the owners get for a hit film release. As per reports, the film has also inked deals with some screens in Hyderabad.
Market experts say the deal will benefit both Amazon and theatre owners. It is hoped that Amazon will gain the upper hand in the retail market by rapidly delivering ordered items from local godowns and at the same time the theatres can recover from losses.
