Are These Telugu Big Producers Looking To Become Hollywood Studios?
By: Tupaki Desk | 7 Jun 2019 10:56 AM GMTHollywood Studios have a structure that no other production house around the world follows. That structure really helped them survive over the years and they are now pioneers in filmmaking.
Disney owns more than 40% of the market share and it could enter different markets around the globe with their unique signature. They increased their percent from 13-23% of market share by purchasing Lucas Films, Marvel Studios which have properties like Star Wars and Superhero films.
Now they grew past 40% as Fox Searchlight and Twentieth Century Fox merged their companies into Walt Disney. Time Warner owns DC Comics and they have 16% market share which is second to Disney.
Telugu producers seem to be adapting to Hollywood style operations going further. Geetha Arts and Suresh Productions are the most successful and long standing big production houses in Telugu Cinema.
Vijaya, Vauhini, Prasad Arts, AVM started out as production houses and then built their own studios in Chennai. They grew till 1970's but then except for AVM rest all stopped production. AVM also stopped producing now.
In Hindi, after Navketan Films and Raj Kapoor, not many thought about developing their production houses to Studios. Hence, there are studios except Yash Raj Studios, where you can shoot and complete post production but cannot expect them to be producers.
Hollywood Studios like Disney and Time Warner have different production houses like New Line Cinema to produce different types of films. These studios have strong distribution systems in place around the world, to release different films with various budgets.
They invite independent producers to show them the finished products and if the executives like them, they will buy them or distribute them across the World or in North America.
Suresh Productions adapted this style of operation and they are inviting independent and young producers to showcase their films to them which they may buy and release or just distribute like Pelli Choopulu, Mental Madilo, Falaknuma Das and upcoming Oh Baby while they are producing their own films like Nene Raju Nene Mantri, Drishyam, Venky Mama.
Geetha Arts is not giving their name to others' products but they established Geetha Arts 2 for producing small films and content based ones. They have a big distribution system all around Telugu states and ties with most powerful of the local distributors where they are directly not in the market.
Looks like both of them are trying to bring back olden days of Telugu Cinema where studio culture flourished but became unsuccessful as they did not adapt to changing times. Suresh Babu and Allu Aravind seem to take Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar examples, who have become two mighty studios in Bollywood and are looking to enter regional cinema too.
