Bell Bottom Movie Review: Captivating & Intriguing!

At a time when a lot of heroes and filmmakers of Bollywood are releasing their films on OTT platforms in order to avoid risks, superstar Akshay Kumar took the first step and released his spy thriller 'Bell Bottom' in theatres. Directed by Ranjith M Tiwari, this film raised a lot of expectations with its lengthy but interesting trailer.

The film is a spy thriller where Akshay as a RAW agent brings back the hijacked plane to Indian soil without causing any harm to the passengers. Akshay will be seen as Anshul whose code name is 'Bell Bottom'. He recovers from a personal loss and his mother dies while travelling in a flight that gets hijacked by the Pakistanis which makes Anshul serious, single-minded and focused all the time. Vaani Kapoor plays the role of Akshay's love interest and her character has a vital role in the plot. Lara Dutta will be seen as the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Huma Qureshi plays the role of a special agent set in Dubai.

Akshay Kumar is the biggest and strongest positive of this movie. He is quite slick and stylish. His character is quite righteous as he drops every aspect of his normal life whenever national duty calls. His retro look is class and his acting skills need no mention. His acting prowess and screen presence carried most of the film. The emotional scenes with his mother are quite endearing too.

Vani Kapoor looked glamorous once again and exudes a fresh vibe on the screen. Her scenes were entertaining and Lara Dutta looked exactly like Indira Gandhi. She did a very good job and the makeup man needs a special mention for their phenomenal work. Despite her limited screen time, Huma Qureshi made her presence felt and her skills were on full display in one particular scene.

The film deals with a lot of twists and there is a big chance that director can confuse you. Luckily, it is not the case with 'Bell Bottom' as every layer is crystal clear. The backstories and subplots were dealt very well. Despite a lengthy runtime, the director managed to narrate the film in an engaging manner. The massive scale and the production values also benefitted the movie and shooting some grand scenes in the middle of a pandemic needs to be appreciated. The film takes its own time to get started which could've been avoided but it picks up during the second half and things proceed in a captivating manner. The makers took a lot of care in bringing the 80's look but the VFX works should've been better.

'Bell Bottom' is a well-made spy thriller that is ably backed by Akshay and the rest of the cast. You can watch it this weekend happily on the big screen despite a few hiccups in the first half.
