BJP wants amended food bill in parliament monsoon session
By: Tupaki Desk | 13 Jun 2013 9:25 AM GMTThe BJP Thursday said it favoured passing the food security bill in the monsoon session of parliament with "some amendments".
"We want that the food security bill is passed in the upcoming monsoon session of parliament with some amendments," Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh told reporters here.
If the government wanted, it could have passed the landmark legislation in the budget session itself, he said.
The government Thursday said it will make one more effort to get the bill passed in a special session of parliament instead of issuing an ordinance.
The National Food Security Bill aims to provide subsidised foodgrain to around 67 percent of India's 1.2 billion people. Around 800 million people would thus get the subsidised grain, at an initial cost of around Rs.1.3 lakh crore.
