Films of Mani Ratnam always open to packed houses irrespective of word-of-mouth because of his solid fan following. However, The openings for 'Cheliya' were disappointing though there are huge number of fans for his love stories.

After a success like 'Ok Bangaram', Distributors and Exhibitors assumed 'Cheliya' will get a solid opening. To their shock, This romantic entertainer got a poor opening in Telugu States & Overseas. Word-of-Mouth & Reviews have been negative for this Mani directorial. So, Chances of recovering look bleak as of now. Mani Ratnam's brand image took a beating with the miserable Box Office performance of his latest project.

Dil Raju is the distributor of 'Cheliya' Telugu version. After two back-to-back blockbusters (Shatamanam Bhavati and Nenu Local) this year, He will be incurring losses with this project as he bought it for outright price.
