Consumer Court fines BookMyShow, PVR Cinemas for collecting unruly 'Internet Charges'

However, several theatres, multiplexes, and portals have been charging extra charges from the consumers. A consumer has knocked on the doors of the Hyderabad District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission over unruly 'Internet Charges' on customers.
Petitioner Vijay Gopal, who hails from Hyderabad moved the Court against BookMyShow and theatre chain PVR Cinemas for collecting charges from the consumers. However, the petition was filed in 2019.
Calling the practice to collect nearly one-third of the ticket price for booking tickets, unfair, the Consumer Court slapped a penalty amount of Rs 5,000 for BookMyShow and PVR Cinemas and directed to pay the amount towards the Consumer Legal Aid Account of the court.
The Consumer Court had also issued directives to the Multiplex and online aggregator to pay Rs 25,000 each to the petitioner and Rs 1,000 for litigation costs.
