Distributors Asking For Compensation is Right or Wrong?
By: Tupaki Desk | 7 May 2022 5:59 AM GMTShould the heroes compensate the distributors when a film gets bombed at the box office is a question that constantly arises in the industry. The point is in question for a very long time. Telugu cinema got introduced to the idea of distributors getting compensated when Yesteryear Superstar 'Natasekhara' Krishna started compensating the distributors for the losses.
When the legendary actors like Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao and Akkineni Nageswara Rao were believed to not compensate the distributors, Krishna did so making him the darling of filmmakers. This is the reason why directors and producers showed interest in making films with him. After Krishna, we have heard that Thalaivar Rajinikanth implements the same.
Whether or not to compensate the distributors for the film's poor run at the box office is in discussion now as a distributor had written to Undisputed King of Tollywood Megastar Chiranjeevi requesting him to come to his rescue. As Acharya ended up as a big flop, the distributor requested Megastar for compensation.
In his long letter, Rajgopal Bajaj, who distributes Telugu and Kannada films in Raichur highlighted how the distributors had to go through a rough pace due to the Covid pandemic. Shedding light on the issues, the distributor said that the film's failure at the box office pushed him into deep losses.
The distributor said that he had paid total money to get the distribution rights one year back itself and the film did not succeed as expected. In his letter, Rajgopal Bajaj said that out of the money he had spent, only 25 percent came back while the remaining was lost.
Having said that, the distributor made a heartful request to Megastar Chiranjeevi to look into his request and help him at the earliest. In the recent past, we have not seen any distributor asking for compensation.
While it is fair on his part that the distributor is in the middle of the losses and wants the hero to rescue him, the other side of this story is whether the distributors share the huge profits with the heroes. If the distributors get a hit film, they will add nig money into their pocket, but they will not share the success with the makers.
Like a coin has two sides, the compensation story also has two sides. We cannot say one side is correct and one side is wrong. There should be a balance in everything.
