'ET (Evariki Thalavanchadu)' Movie Review

Star hero Suriya has arrived in theatres after a long time with 'ET (Evariki Thalavanchadu). His last two films 'Aakasam Nee Haddu Ra' and 'Jai Bhim' turned out to be huge hits on the OTT platform. Suriya opted for a complete mass family entertainer with a good subject. Directed by Pandiraj, the film got released with decent buzz. Let us see how the film turned out.
Story:
Krishnamohan (Suriya) is a respectable lawyer who lives in his village. He cannot stand seeing people in misery and he responds even strongly when women are in trouble. Kamesh (Vinay Rai) who is a businessman from another village takes private videos of girls in some way and blackmails them. When his friend's family gets severely affected by this blackmail, Krishnamohan decides to take things in his own hands. What kind of challenges he faces and how he punishes Kamesh form the rest of the story.
Analysis:
Ajith's 'Valimai' was released two weeks back and it failed to impress the Telugu audience. Barring the action sequences, people did not like the routine screenplay and stereotypical sentimental scenes. It failed badly here but the film minted around 200 crores in Tamil Nadu. Previously, the Telugu audience used to give first preference to mass masala entertainers but tables have turned now. The Tamil filmmakers and audience are enjoying commercial films heavily and 'ET' falls in the same category. Suriya who showcased his mark with films in OTT like 'Aakasam Nee Haddu Ra' and 'Jai Bhim' has decided to take the routine route this time. While the storyline which deals with atrocities on women is strong, the execution is neither engaging nor racy which turned out to be its biggest minus. The haphazard created by 'ET' doesn't impress the audience this time.
The film looks like a drama based on the rivalry between two villages. The hero is presented in lungi and takes part in 'Jatharas' and marriages most of the time. People start to expect a rural drama. On the other hand, the villain is in contrast to the hero as he looks stylish and deals business worth over hundreds of crores. The establishment of the conflict point between these two characters appears unconvincing. There are a lot of loopholes in the film and logic goes for a toss in the story itself. Leaking private videos is a global problem and trying to restrict it between two villages did not work out. We do not connect with the story or characters on an emotional level and hero roles fail to get elevated because of this.
The initial scenes are very crucial for any film and 'ET' fails during this part itself. There is a bit of confusion among the audience regarding the message directed wanted to send through hero and villain's roles. Director tries to take the film on a lighter note with the introduction of the hero's family, the heroine's family, and a love story between the lead pair. They are a bit silly and test the patience of the audience. The Tamil flavor is quite heavy in this movie and we cannot connect with them. The love track falls flat and the first half makes the audience wait eagerly for the conflict point which arrives before the interval point.
Though a few mind games between the hero and villain at the beginning of the second half are executed well, the same problem comes up once again. The narration is not good and the villain character is not written properly. Despite his best efforts Suriya fails to lift the film and the second half is not very different from the first barring a few portions. The lengthy climax drains the audience completely. The makers wanted to create a haphazard from the start to end but did not think of narrating the story in an engaging manner. Suriya is your only reason to watch this film.
Performances:
Suriya does complete justice to whatever role he is given and he did the same for 'ET'. His character is not written well but his acting prowess is evident in the emotional scenes. Priyanka Arul Mohan is decent and Vinay Rai impresses you with his acting. His character is introduced well but gets brought down by sub-standard writing. The director failed to use Sathyaraj properly. Saranya is as usual in the hero's mother role. Soori makes you laugh at times and the rest of the cast is okay.
Technicians:
D. Imman's music is suited to Tamil audiences and it is hard for the Telugu crowd to connect with them. The background score is quite good but the songs fail to register. This film doesn't require a cinematographer of Ratnavelu's stature. Sun Pictures spent well on this film and it can be seen on the screen. Pandiraj failed to get the best out of the resources available at his disposal. Though the point is good, his screenplay is quite disappointed. He failed both as a writer and director.
