Film Theaters Should Be Permitted To Reopen In August

The deadly coronavirus is ringing danger bells across the country. It's been more than four months that the entire film industry is shut overnight including the film theatres. While the discussion on reopening the big screens is continuing, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has recommended to the Union Home Ministry that cinema halls all over the country be allowed to reopen in August.

During the close-door industry interaction with the CII Media Committee on Friday, I&B Secretary Amit Khare said that he has suggested that cinema halls may be allowed to resume all over India as early as August 1 - or at the latest, around August 31. However, the final decision should be taken by the Home ministry.

Khare suggested a seating arrangement in a way that alternate seats in the first row and then the next row be kept empty and continuing in this fashion throughout.

On the other hand, Cinema owners are not ready to welcome the decision as running films at 25 per cent hall capacity is worse than keeping the cinemas shut.
