After a spell-binding performance in 'Virata Parvam', she arrived on the big screens once again with a movie titled 'Gargi'. Story:
Gargi (Sai Pallavi) is a private school teacher who also gives tuition to kids in the evening. She is happy with her life but it turns upside down when her father who works as a security guard in an apartment gets arrested in a gang rape case. Since the evidence is strong against Gargi's father, no lawyer comes to defend him. At this point, Gargi takes the help of a junior lawyer and starts fighting for her dad. She gathers a lot of information and evidence making the case very interesting. What happens to Gargi's father? How Gargi gets him out forms the crux of the story.
Analysis:
Cinema is a form of entertainment but the definition of entertainment is not just a high dose of comedy. But most of the directors and producers are trying to make a lot of business by making the audience laugh and cheer in theatres. This commercial format has become the unofficial meaning of entertainment and moving subjects with good message are decreasing with each passing day. But there are still some filmmakers who do not care about the 'Entertainment' and make films on sensitive or hard-hitting storylines. 'Gargi' is a movie which belongs to that category. They discussed a top like sexual abuse of children in the most mature and most touching manner which will definitely impact the audience. There might be some issues with the narration and slow pace but 'Gargi' leaves a lasting impression.
The movie deals with the emotional turmoil that the wrongly accused family has to go through in society and the condition of the small kids who were sexually abused. These are the issues that people don't like to talk about in public but the team of 'Gargi' dared to discuss it on the screen. The movie may be uncomfortable and painful at times as it discusses about the gang rape of a nine-year-old kid. But you need to prepare for that before entering the theatres as the movie gives a great message in the end and plants a seed of thought in your brain. The courtroom scenes are the biggest strength of this movie. A transgender being a judge for this case has been explain wonderfully in this movie with a simple dialogue. The director needs to be appreciated for getting this thought. There are a lot of sequences that touch your heart.
Despite the good story, detailed execution and wonderful message, 'Gargi' suffers a lot due to slow narration. There are some unnecessary scenes too which sidetrack the audience. The last twist makes the scenes that arrived before pretty useless. Some logics went missing too but all these flaws can be forgiven due to the strong point they dealt with. Sai Pallavi shows her uniqueness in script selection once again. We don't know what the film does commercially but the makers and Sai Pallavi will not disappoint.
Performances:
This role is another feather in Sai Pallavi's cap. She should be appreciated for taking up such a film and her performance is amazing as usual. She carried the film on her shoulders in many occasions. She was very natural and stands out during her scene with her mother. Kaali Venkat did a very good job as a lawyer. RS Shivaji as Gargi's father is very convincing. The rest of the cast were fine.
Technicians:
Govind Vasantha's background music was moving. He is one of the main pillars of this film. The cinematography was simple but impactful. It suited the mood of the movie. The production values are adequate and Rakendu Mouli's Telugu dialogues were very well written. They created the desired impact. Gautham Ramachandran who produced, wrote and directed this film deserves a pat on the back for telling this story in the most honest way possible. Filmmakers like this are rare and he makes a good impact. Had he made the film a bit more pacey, it would have been better.
