I&B Ministry To Issue Guidelines For OTT Platforms Soon

Over-the-top media service saw a massive rise in viewership and viewing minutes in India after the Coronavirus pandemic and the series of lockdowns. Users started looking at the OTT option with the Covid-19 situations.
Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Voot, ZEE5, Sony Liv, ALTBalaji, Eros Now, Arré are some of the famous OTT platforms in the country.
There are no guidelines for the OTT platforms on the content, be it romance or violence. The facility has also helped the OTT platforms to spread their wings and reach their target audience.
The streaming platforms offer different packs and services. While some platforms offer monthly offers, some platforms come with annual subscriptions.
With no restrictions and guidelines, several incidents of allegedly hurting the sentiments of other religions were reported. Tandav and Mirzapur web series are examples of this.
Taking all these developments into consideration, the Centre has earlier set up a body to frame guidelines for the OTT services and the certification process for the content that appear on the services.
Addressing a press conference today, Information and Broadcasting Union Minister Prakash Javadeka said that the announcement on the guidelines for the OTT platforms will be issued soon.
The government took the decision on the guidelines, after receiving multiple complaints against the content on OTT platforms. The content released on OTT will not come under the Press Council Act, Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, he said.
The debate on issuing certificates for the OTT content came to the limelight after the Amazon Prime originals Tandav made it to the headlines for allegedly hurting the sentiments of Hindus.
