Actor Kamal Haasan long back tried to release his film 'Viswaroopam' one day before the Theatrical release through the DTH services. At that time all the producers and Theater owners have rejected his proposition outright but now with Corona pandemic lock down, the producers are now realizing the prophecy of Kamal Haasan who way back expected the doom of Theaters.
After 8 years, the movie producers are literally trying to sell their movies to OTT platforms that would stream the movie. With this there will be no need of theatrical release in this Corona lock down days. The OTT platforms have become a boon for all the small movie producers who find it difficult to get Theaters for their films.
Already few Tollywood producers are in negotiations with the OTT heads to stream their films. Recently the producer who was ready to release the Tamil dubbed film 'Shakti' starring Siva Karthikeyan has released his movie on Amazon Prime itself as he could not release the movie in this lock down time and moreover there were no hopes for normalcy in Tollywood and no one knows when Theaters would be open for public.
The direct release in OTT is already a trend in Bollywood. Most of the films made on a decent budget have been released on Netflix already. The movies include Ghoul, Guilty and Drive to name a few because the theatre rentals and distributor pressures are high in Bollywood. With the idea of directly selling to Netflix good content driven films are finding the space in movie lovers hearts!
