Did he know that Cheliyaa will be a flop?

Karthi gained a lot of market in Telugu with movies like Awara but when he is down, Oopiri once again brought some life into it. He released few more movies in Telugu but none of them clicked.
The biggest disaster of them is, Cheliyaa directed by Mani Ratnam. The movie did not work out because of its 90's style of filmmaking and Mani Ratnam did advice Karthi to think before he agrees. Karthi revealed, "I wanted to work with Mani sir and I did not want to discuss box office terms with him. I enjoyed working with him and even though he advised me to think before accepting the movie as it is an experiment, I just went ahead to learn from him."
He revealed indirectly that he expected Cheliyaa to fail at the box office. But he remarked that he learned a lot from the master maker in how to behave like character and how to narrate a script. Now, his latest Khakhee is also a film based on 90's incident. Few portions could resemble the time period and that shows the guts of the actor to believe in story than sentiments.
