Laxmmi Review: Promised A Hit But Delivered A Disappointment!

Superstar Akshay Kumar's 'Laxmmi' which was a remake of Telugu-Tamil hit film 'Kanchana' is now streaming on Disney Hotstar. The film was in the news for a lot of reasons recently and let us see whether it reached the level of its original or not.

The makers retained the original story but made some minor tweaks to suit the taste of the North audience. The narration was kept simple and straight but what works against 'Laxmmi' is that it is too artificial. The main asset of 'Kanchana' is its comedy. Despite the over-the-top and loud nature, the hilarious scenes were liked by many. That is no the case with 'Laxmmi' as the comedy looks way too forced and the actors try too hard to generate the laughs. There are many sequences that appear cringe-worthy to say the least.

The film is made on a grand scale and Lawrence is backed by a quality technical team. The cinematography, editing, costumes and everything looks in place but it is the screenplay and performances that let down the film. With the comedy portions irritating the audience, the emotional angle appears way too heavy despite working out. There are no thrills in this film and runs on a flat note in most of the parts.

Despite all its flaws, it is Akshay Kumar that saves the film to a certain extent with his impeccable timing. Despite being a superstar, he worked very hard to fit in the role. There were a few scenes where he looked a bit aged but his action during some comic portions will surely bring the house down. Sharad Kelkar convinces you in his role and brings the required emotion. All Kiara Advani had to do is look glamorous on-screen in a spinless role and she did it with ease.

Tagged as a horror-comedy, 'Laxmmi' neither offers you horror nor ample comedy.
