After a long gap, handsome and talented hero Adivi Sesh is back on the big screens. This time, he turned himself into Major Sundeep Unnikrishnan who valiantly fought the Pakistani terrorists and sacrificed his life in the '26/11 Attacks' back in 2008. 'Major' explains the life story of this hero right from his childhood days. Saiee Manjrekar will be seen as his love interest while Prakash Raj and Revathi will play the roles of his parents. The trailer raised expectations massively and the special screenings helped the film massively too. With a positive buzz all over, this biographical drama has hit the screens today and let us see how it is.
Story:
Sandeep Unnikrishnan (Adivi Sesh) decides right from his childhood that he wants to join the armed forces while his parents wanted him to become an engineer or a doctor. Sandeep fails to get recruited in the Navy but gets determined to join the army. He goes against the wish of his parents and joins the military. He falls in love with Isha (Saiee Manjrekar) during his schooling days but breaks up due to his ambition. He finally gets married to the same woman but their relationship faces a lot of troubles due to Sandeep giving first priority to being a soldier rather than a husband. At this point in time, the Mumbai blasts happen and Sandeep convinces the higher officials to go into the field of action and lead the NSG commandos team. How does Sandeep fight the terrorists? How many lives will he save? How did he sacrifice his life in that process? All these questions will be answered on the big screen.
Analysis:
When you are making a biopic, it is quite common to take a few cinematic liberties and glorify the person on whom the story is based on. When you present a story as it happened, there will not be enough room for drama which is a key part of cinema. The audience gets connected to the drama which needs to be built perfectly. This is the reason why a lot of filmmakers take cinematic liberties when they are making a biopic. It is even more necessary when the person and the incidents surrounding the person are still fresh in the minds of everyone. Running a film for more than two and half hours on a man who sacrificed his life during the '26/11 Mumbai Attacks' and make the audience emotional at regular intervals needs a lot of skillful writing and perfect direction which happened for 'Major'. The team of 'Major' has put in sincere and honest work in front of the audience which will be highly appreciated despite the over-exaggeration at times.
'Major' will stand in the list of best biopics ever made in this country and the way the team has presented the life of Sandeep Unnikrishnan deserves a lot of appreciation. Though a few doubts may come up about how much truth has been shown and how much has been exaggerated, the 'Major' team has succeeded in pulling the heartstrings of the audience and make you feel every emotion in the movie. You celebrate Sandeep's victories, you will like Sandeep's love story, you will feel for Sandeep's emotional turmoil, you will cry for Sandeep's ultimate sacrifice, you will burst into tears looking at his parent's heartbreak and you will have a proud feeling when Sandeep's father talks about his son at the end.
The second half is the heart of 'Major'. How Major Sandeep and his team protect the hostages and kill the terrorists has been showcased brilliantly. this one-and-a-half-hour episode keeps you glued to your seats and makes you cheer for every heroic moment. Sesh and Sashi Kiran have conceived these scenes wonderfully. Each and every scene revolving around the 'Taj Hotel' is has been written and executed to perfection. There are plenty of nail-biting moments during this episode and the drama built before the interval bang too deserves a lot of appreciation. The editing is top-notch during these portions.
As you know, 'Major' is not just about the 'Taj Hotel' incident. It gives us a peek into his formation days. His relationship with his parents, his love story and his training in the army were also presented decently. Interestingly, they were all used to showcase the character and nature of Sandeep rather than presenting the emotional bonds. The makers couldn't take too many liberties during these episodes too which made them fast forward these stages and move towards the Taj incident by pre-interval which is when the film goes to another level. Barring the cinematic liberties, over-exaggeration in the action episodes and a slightly slow first half, 'Major' is a film that should be watched by everyone. The entire team did a great job with this biopic which needs to be appreciated.
Performances:
After 'Kshanam' and 'Goodachari', Adivi Sesh comes up with another memorable role. The way he made the audience believe that he is Sandeep Unnikrishnan is phenomenal. His measured performance was one of the major highlights of the movie. His physique matched the requirement of an army officer and he is definitely going to stay in people's minds for a long time with this role.
Saiee Manjrekar who looked average in 'Ghani' was surprisingly good in 'Major'. She looked beautiful and did a good job with her role. Her chemistry with Adivi Sesh was adorable onscreen. Sobitha Dulipala gave a beautiful performance in a brief role. An amazing actress like Revathi is not properly utilized but she did the best she could. Murali Sharma was a perfect choice and gave a convincing performance. It was Prakash Raj as the hero's father who steals the show every time he appears. He makes you emotional during his last speech and proves to everyone why he is still one of the best in business.
Technicians:
'Major' has one of the best technical outputs in recent times. Sri Charan Pakala gave beautiful songs but it is his background scores during the heroic moments that elevate the proceedings to a whole new level. He gave his best output for Adivi Sesh's film once again. The production design is superb as the Taj Hotel has been recreated quite well and enough care has been taken to present the nineties. The action choreography has been phenomenal and you are sure to get goosebumps for a lot of scenes in the second half. Editing work is near perfect. The production values are top-notch and there is no compromise from the producers. Abburi Ravi's dialogues touch your heart at times. Sesh excels as a writer once again. The way he used the first half to build the character of Sandeep is quite good and his screenplay during the second half is very gripping. Sashi Kiran Thikka once again presented the story perfectly. He brought out the best from his cast. He took what is on the paper and delivered it to the screen in a better fashion.
