Mani Ratnam, the master story-teller of South Indian Cinema, nosedived into a deep abyss of darkness with his Ravanan/Villain. He never was one of the biggest box office directors but his films were considered to be lessons for upcoming filmmakers. His films like Dalapathy, Nayakudu, Geethanjali, Bombay, Roja, Mounaragam, Anjali, Amrutha, Sakhi, Gharshana put him on a pedestal that none of his contemporaries have achieved in their lifetime.
His movies like Iddaru, Dil Se, Yuva and OK Bangaram turned to be decent money earners at the box office even though commercially they were not highly rated. The artistry in the storytelling is still praised for being edgy and inventive. After Guru, Mani could not weave his magic wand on audience with his next releases like Villain and Kadali. Even though AR Rehman gave popular music for these films too, the films ended up being huge disasters.
Still he never lost the respect he commands among the audience and he is all set to make another love story in the air force back drop. His movie, Cheliya already a super hit in terms of audio sales and air wave demand, need to come up with better box office performance than his previous release. The music and trailers do hint at such a possibility, but his hardcore fans are waiting for the master to strike back in terms of content as well.
