'Michael' Movie Review

Sundeep Kishan earned a positive image among the audience through his performances. He scored a good hit with 'Venkatadri Express' and looked like a bright prospect but luck didn't favour him. He delivered failures one after the other. Now, he is coming up with 'Michael' which is a bilingual. The movie has a very big cast and the trailer looked very promising. Let us see if it quenches the thirst of Sundeep or not.
Story:
Michael (Sundeep) is an orphan who enters Mumbai with the sole purpose of killing his father for betraying his mother. Gurunath (Gautham Menon) who is already a big don in Mumbai takes Michael under his wing. Michael rescues Gurunath on two occasions which makes Micheal close to the latter. Gurunath goes on and kills everyone who tried to kill him. He assigns the task of killing a person along with his daughter to Michael. He goes to Delhi to complete the mission but he falls in love with Teera (Divyansha) who is the daughter of the person he needs to kill. What will Michael do now? Will he go against Guru? What happens to Michael's love? Did Michael get revenge on his dad? All these questions will be answered in the movie.
Analysis:
The movie opens with a sequence where the rowdies are beating a person and they ask about the hero. The person starts singing laurels about the hero and the hero makes a grand entry thereby bashing everyone of them. Everyone one in the frame starts hyping up the hero and elevate him to no end. Hero fights with someone every ten minutes and fires the gun like he is playing with some Diwali toy. Even the music composer, cameraman and other technicians are ready to give the protagonist a huge elevation shot every 2 minutes. We get a feeling that something great is happening onscreen but its nothing. To put it simply, 'Michael' is what happens when the writer thinks that elevations are the only reason why 'KGF' became a hit. Many makers tried to replicate what 'KGF' did and faltered. 'Michael' is the latest addition to this list. Starting from the 90's backdrop, every single aspect including the background score, visuals, mafia storyline, hero characterisation and his upbringing follow the same pattern of 'KGF'. Despite the elevations going overboard in 'KGF' at places, the emotions are very strong in the movie. As Rajamouli said, a fight needs to have a strong reason and a lot of emotion for the audience to root for the hero. The viewer needs to connect with the hero and it is only then the elevations will have the necessary impact. The director ignored all these and made the hero fight all the time and focused only on stylish presentation. The scenes do not have the required strength.
In a 90s backdrop, the director tried to showcase the hero and heroine in a trendy manner which makes you understand where 'Michael' misfired. The team failed to come up with a gripping screenplay. A lot of movies came up with a similar story and backdrop. Even Gautham Menon's last outing 'Life Of Muthu' had the same storyline. Despite having a routine story, the director needs to make sure that the proceedings are interesting and it is what went missing in 'Michael'.
The viewer gets disconnected right at the opening sequence which started on a grand note but went sideways instantly. As the movie goes on, it becomes a test for the audience's patience. We wait for the arrival of Vijay Sethupathi but the happenings onscreen make you come to the conclusion that things will be no different when Makkal Selvan arrives. He enters when the film's graph fell down completely. There are a few twists in the movie but the damage had been done already. Barring a lot of build-up scenes 'Michael' does not connect with the audience.
Performances:
Sundeep Kishan looked good in Michael's character. He focused a lot on his appearance as he was quite stylish despite being a rowdy in the film. His acting is fine as there are no challenging scenes to test his potential. Divyansha Kaushik is very beautiful in the movie but her character lacked substance. Despite coming on screen for a limited time, Vijay Sethupathi made his mark. Gautham Menon is just okay in this film. The makers could have written this role in a better way and they even failed to utilise Gautham Menon's full potential as an actor. Varalaxmi did good in a small role while Anasuya Bharadwaj was decent. Her dialogues are a bit over the top at times. Aiyyappa P Sharma did quite well.
Technicians:
Sam CS who is known for his background scores tried very hard to lift a lot of scenes that did not have substance. But his impressive re-recording did not match with the content. His songs are okay. Kiran Kaushik did a fantastic job as the DOP. His visuals are amazing and the '90s backdrop has been present realistically. The production values are good but the movie failed to impress despite all the technical brilliance. It is mainly the fault of writer and director Ranjith Jaykodi. His taking his stylish but he did not showcase his talent in any other aspect. His screenplay is quite regular and the build-up scenes are way over-the-top. The writing is majorly disappointing and one wonders what he said to bring these many big names onboard.
