Biopics of Sportspersons is the trend that has picked up in Bollywood in the recent years. From 'Paan Singh Tomar' to 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' & 'Mary Kom', Movie Lovers have appreciated every such attempt to glorify personalities who served the Nation at the highest-level. This time, The biopic of India's most successful skipper has been presented in the form of 'MS Dhoni: The Untold Story'. Let's see what it is all about…
Synopsis:
'MS Dhoni: The Untold Story' is a true story of a boy from a lower-middle class family fulfilling his dream of playing cricket against all the odds. From his Childhood to Railway Ticket Collector, Cricketing Career and Love Life, Insights have been given for everything. What all the struggles he faced in the process of achieving what he want and how he led India to a historic World Cup victory in 2011 is the main crux of the story.
Performances:
Sushant Singh Rajput carried the film on his shoulders. He just breathed life into the character of Dhoni and hats off to the way he moulded himself. He achieved perfection in the body language, mannerisms and trademark shots. Out of all, The manner in which he beautifully portrayed the calmness we find in Dhoni during pressure situations is commendable.
Anupam Kher as Dhoni's Father is so good. Rajeev Sharma as Dhoni's Coach is splendid. Bhumika Chawla is flawless. Kaira Advani and Disha Patani have done justice to their roles. The Actor who played AK Ganguly's role too did a fine job. Actor who reprised Yuvraj Singh's character looks more or less similar to the World Cup hero.
Pros:
Sushant Singh Rajput
Untold Facts
Direction
Cons:
Second Half
Runtime
Technicalities:
Songs in 'MS Dhoni' were just passable. Telugu Lyrics weren't good enough. One of the songs have Tamil lyrics & its really surprising. Background Score and Cinematography were major attractions. Sanjay Chowdary's BGM helped in taking the viewers into the right mood. Santhosh Thundigal's Camera Work is splendid. Production Values are grand. Director Neeraj Pandey who is a specialist at handling thrillers explored a new dimension in him with Dhoni. Despite the restrictions, He presented the life story of the Cricketer in a beautiful manner. None of the sequences look artificial and that's the real strength of this biopic.
Analysis:
'MS Dhoni: The Untold Story' is the journey of a Man who reached pinnacle in the field chosen by him with talent, hardwork and determination. The positive angle of Dhoni's life is being presented in an inspirational manner. Instead of a biopic, It should be seen as an analysis of MSD's life. If not for the incorporation of emotions and moving narration, This biopic would have ended up as a Documentary. All those who love cricket will get connected to the emotions and this statement applies to the people even in anti-Dhoni category.
Not just the success in cricketing career or World Cup triumph has made Dhoni a great person. Its his personality and the way he conducts himself all the time made him what he is Today. Neeraj Pandey has focussed more on both these aspects. Childhood of Dhoni, Factors which influenced him to chose Cricket as a career, Hurdles he faced & his Internal Conflict were showcased in a heart-touching manner. Neeraj Pandey designed each and every sequence so naturally, but never gave a feeling of a autobiography.
Biopics have a set of parameters & Makers can't deviate from the original story just for the sake of commercial elements. And again, Director deserves credit for the superb execution of Interval Block where Dhoni takes a firm decision regarding his career.
First Half is quite interesting as people weren't aware of Dhoni's background, upbringing, job and life before turning into a professional cricketer. As we are already aware of the developments in Dhoni's life after he was selected for India's National Team, Second Half isn't as engaging as that of the previous half. Two Romantic Tracks and Songs were included in this part of the movie. The pre-climax and climax where experiences of 2011 World Cup were shared moves the audience emotionally.
Makers haven't touched any of the controversial aspects in Dhoni's career. Even failures and negative angles of the Indian Skipper were ignored. As a result, It turns out to be a one-dimensional flick and runs on a flat note. How Dhoni mastered the art of handling pressure wasn't touched! Romantic Angle in Dhoni and the secret of helicopter shot were quite surprising. Overall, 'MS Dhoni: The Untold Story' guarantees an experience to remember for all the sports lovers.
Bottom Line: Its not a Cinema but Life!
