Talk: Netflix And Amazon saved Dhanush and Nani

Top stars in South India cinema are slowly but surely preparing themselves to ride the OTT wave. A fair few top stars have already lined up OTT projects. Coming to the topic, Dhanush and Nani should now be indebted to Netflix and Amazon Prime respectively for saving the producers4 of their recent films, Jagame Thandhiram and Tuck Jagadish respectively. Wonder why? Here is the story.

Dhanush's Jagame Thandhiram managed to garner the attention of cine enthusiasts with its intriguing teasers and trailer. The makers were clear about the release plans much in advance and they announced that the film will be releasing on Netflix and skip theatrical release. This sparked outrage from film exhibitors in Tamil Nadu but the makers persisted with Netflix release. Later, everyone got to understand why the makers opted not to release the film in theatres. Jagame Thandhiram, directed by Karthik Subbaraj turned out to be a damp squib. The film received thumbs down from the viewers right from the start. Many opined that the film would have been a complete washout if it had been released in theatres. They say Netflix saved the producers of the Dhanush starrer by acquiring the rights of the film.

Now, a similar scene is repeating with Nani's Tuck Jagadish, which has Nani in the lead role. The Shiva Nirvana directorial did not get the best of responses from the OTT audiences. Industry insiders opine that the film would have struggled to put up good numbers at the box office if it released in theatres. At a time when films, which garnered a pretty positive response are also struggling to mint big bucks at the box office, a film like Tuck Jagadish, which is being termed a mixed bag might struggle to post respectable numbers. Moreover, Tuck Jagadish caters to family audiences. Given the Covid situation, family audiences are not willing to step out to watch films in theatres. So, the Nani starrer would have really struggled to mint profits at the box office. It was the right move from the makers to go for direct OTT release, a few opine.
