Six Producers Drag Ilayaraja To Court

A Group of Six Tamil Producers moved a civil suit in the Madras High Court against Ilayaraja’s claim of copyright ownership for songs composed by him. They argued, ‘Maestro can’t claim copyright ownership for songs which were scored for music in feature films composed by various producers. Producer will always be the first owner of all the copyrights of the film including the songs’.

Petitioners objected Ilayaraja claiming copyright ownership of the songs composed by him in films. Why because, Even Heroes, Comedians and Technicians will claim ownership of copyright citing their contribution if Ilayaraja’s claims were accepted. In the end, The Producer who took care of all the financial requirements of a film will have to end up gaining nothing.

Producers sought an injunction order declaring a Producer alone can claim copyright ownership of the films even if its songs.

In the past, Ilayaraja served legal notices to several playback singers including SP Balu and Chitra to stop them from performing the songs composed by him at the concerts. He even demanded for payment of royalty for performing his songs in the music events.
