It surpassed Kamal Hassan's gangster action flick 'Vikram' as per sources and ended up being the highest-grosser of all time in Kollywood. As the makers suggest, it collected around 400 crores and fans are Mani Ratnam are delighted to hear this.
Despite the film not being well-received in other languages, the Tamil audience are terming it as a classic and hailing praises on the movie. The second part is already underway and it will be coming out next year. While 'PS – 1' has a story that will connect to the Tamil audience instantly, one fails to understand how it ended up being the biggest hit in Tamil Nadu and even crossed 'Vikram' which was a superior film in terms of performance, technical brilliance and screenplay.
The 'Roja' director failed to create the same level of excitement the book created and everyone who watched 'Ponniyin Selvan 1' can vouch for that. The novel was written in five parts but the legendary director decided to tell the story in two parts. A few claim that Mani Ratnam and team failed to do proper homework as the film feels like a story that began from the middle and ended without a finishing point.
While the plot can be outlined as the vassals revolting against the Chola kingdom and their sons trying to protect it but there is a lack of clarity in the screenplay. The film looks like a collection of scenes with no link between them. Also, the main characters like Aditya Karikala, Arunmozhi Varman and Nandini are established through dialogues and there are no scenes to establish their characters.
A lot of people complained that 'PS – 1' is painfully slow without any high moments. They even stated that the film focused too much on the detailing which made the film quite complex. Though Mani Ratnam couldn't meet the expectations, he managed to restore his pride and one can predict that more people would find it interesting when they watch it on the OTT platform as they can playback the scenes till they understand the intricacies.
