Dhanush has been relentlessly trying to create a market for his movies in Telugu. He partly succeeded in the mission with 'Raghuvaran B.Tech' but 'Nava Manmadhudu' was a huge disappointment. This time, He released his new project 'Thodari/Rail' in Tamil & Telugu simultaneously. While 'Nenu Sailaja' beauty Keerthy Suresh played the female lead, Prabhu Solomon of 'Prema Khaidi' & 'Gaja Raju' fame wielded the megaphone. Let's have a loot at the interesting aspects of this 'Rail' Journey…
Synopsis:
Shivaji (Dhanush), an Orphan, works as Rail Pantry Worker in Delhi-Chennai Express Train. Soon after spotting Saroja (Keerthy Suresh) who does touch-up for a Heroine & aspires to be a Singer, Love at first sight happens for him and he decides to win her heart before the end of train journey. Few unfortunate incidents happen during this journey. A dacoit gang targets the passengers in the train. Things go out of control after the death of train driver. In the meantime, Shivaji & Saroja face terrorism charges. How did the Love Birds & Passengers overcome this situation forms the rest of the tale!
Performances:
Dhanush deserves a pat on his back for agreeing to do the role of a Pantry Worker despite enjoying a Star Status. In addition, He doesn't appear as a hero in the movie but just as one of the characters. He is so good at doing any role effortlessly and doesn't disappoint with 'Rail' either.
Keerthy Suresh is a major asset to 'Rail'. In fact, She overshadows a star like Dhanush here and we get to see a new dimension in her. Her performance is so natural, conveys a lot through her eyes and histrionics were flawless. On the flipside, Director hasn't etched her role well.
Harish Uthaman irritates with over-action. Thambi Ramayya and Karunakaran tickles the funny bone. Nothing much to say about rest of the cast.
Pros:
Keerthy Suresh
First Half
Cons:
Direction
Narration
Run Time
Technicalities:
D Immam's role as Music Director was limited as 'Rail' is a thriller. There is hardly any scope for melodies and only the first song between Lead Pair is good enough. Background Score is alright. Vetrivel Mahendran's Camera Work is okay. Dialogues could have been better. Editing isn't poor. Production Values were poor. CG Work is below par. Director Prabhu Solomon neither succeeded in dealing the Love Story nor the Thriller Element.
Analysis:
Prabhu Solomon is known for pure love stories with feel good elements. When such a filmmaker teams up with Dhanush, Movie Buffs would expect a heart-touching subject from the duo. However, Director tried to blend Love, Suspense, Thrill & Action in 'Rail'. That's where, The movie entered the wrong track and never been able to arrest the attention of viewers.
Inspired by Hollywood flick 'Unstoppable', Prabhu Solomon choose train as the backdrop for his story and took the risk of shooting the entire film on it. The end result could have been different had if he made it like a pure love story or thriller instead of mixing too many elements.
Cinematic Liberties were taken to an extent that Logic goes for a toss. None of the passengers look tensed even though the train goes out of control. Instead of worrying about their safety, They enjoy the news items in electronic media and social media. Audience get disconnected due to these silly sequences.
Love Story wasn't designed properly and this drawback worked against the movie. Comedy Blocks were good but they have Tamil flavor. First Half is passable due to the entertainment. But, The Second Half is unbearable and illogical scenes continue to test the patience. Climax ruins the good impression audience have on Tamil Cinema. Overall, 'Rail' is a forgettable film.
Bottom Line: This Journey is so tedious!
