Rajamouli miscalculation: Why RRR did not release in December?
By: Tupaki Desk | 4 Jan 2022 11:28 AM GMTRRR film was scheduled to release in July 2021. Due to uncertainty about vaccination in India, the prevailing second wave of pandemic did not let movie industry all over India to move forward.
Now, the third wave rumours have pushed it into further dilemma hoping for better recovery soon. Filmmakers tried to release their films post October and December turned out to be an ideal month for Indian Movie Industry.
Akhanda, Pushpa The Rise turned out to be big box office winners and Spiderman No Way Home became a jackpot that Indian trade pundits did not predict.
83 turned out to be a disappointment. Had RRR released in December rather than Pushpa on 17th, it would have steadily grossed Rs. 750 crores gross till date.
Instead, it had to postpone to Summer season. Movie Industry bigwigs and production houses think that Rajamouli cannot just decide on a date when industry has been facing doldrums.
When the film was completed, had he just came forward to release during Christmas, movie industry would have easily received enough boost to go through another lull period hoping for faster recovery from Third wave or Omicron outbreak.
Rajamouli doesn't wish to clash and he uses everything in his power to get that window of no releases two weeks before his film and after his film release. A four weeks of lull period during crucial summer just for RRR would further put other films in doldrums.
Already, producers have been contemplating on releasing movies on OTT to compensate for their losses as soon as possible if third wave continues to peak till end of February.
Movie theatres have been shutting operations completely and if Rajamouli again tries to do the same thing during Summer and ask for postponement of Sarkaru Vaari Paata in Telugu and several big budget Hindi films that could open in theatres, he might see more resistance than acceptance this time around.
Christmas season would have given him four weeks of box office run till the end of Sankranti/Pongal season. Had movie got hit talk with Ram Charan and Jr. NTR coming with their films after three to four years, easily the movie would have had advantage till 26th January weekend.
Looks like Rajamouli and his team trying to increase buzz all over India for RRR, underestimated Omicron and pandemic third wave possibility of spreading early in India and worldwide. Miscalculation from RRR team and this causes for further problems for Industry along with Third wave feel Industry bigwigs.
