Rajya Sabha: Majority Still A Mirage For BJP

BJP's plans to achieve a majority in Rajya Sabha seem to have slowed down what with the recent poll reversals. The party hoped to attain majority in the Rajya Sabha in 2020. But, it appears would take some more time to realise this dream.
The party's lost majority in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in 2018 and Maharashtra and Jharkhand in 2019. Though the BJP managed to retain power in Haryana, it had lost quite a few seats in the assembly. This time around there would be elections to 73 out of the 245 seats in Rajya Sabha. Of them, the BJP MPs are 18 and the Congress 16.
10 of the vacancies are in UP, followed by 7 in Maharashtra, six in Tamil Nadu and five each in Bihar and Bengal, four each are from AP, Gujarat, Karnataka and Odisha, three each in MP and Rajasthan, two each in in Telangana, Haryana, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh and one each in Uttarakhand, Himachal, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. The BJP is set to lose in states like West Bengal,MP, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Jharkhand.
Experts suggest that the BJP and its allies might win up to 25 seats, while the Congress might win 12 to 15 seats. This could take the Congress tally up by 10 to 12 seats. The BJP needs 123 seats to acquire majority. But it is likely to go up to 110 seats. This means it still needs 11 seats, for which it would have to depend on the TRS, YSRCP and the Biju Janata Dal. The Congress tally will go up to 60
Among those retiring are Ministers Ramdas Athavale, Hardip Puri, Vijay Goel, Digvijay Singh and Sharad Pawar.
