Young and handsome hero Naga Shaurya who is waiting for a hit since a very long time has arrived with 'Rangabali' this weekend. The entertaining promos have generated a good buzz on the movie and their publicity for the film worked quite well too. The movie is expected to be a hilarious commercial entertainer and let us see how it turned out.
Story:
Shaurya alias Sho (Naga Shaurya) is a boy from Rajavaram village in the Godavari region. He is connected to his village a lot. His friends are always by his side and he lives happily. But due to his dad's constant pestering, he goes to Vizag for doing a course in pharmacy. He falls in love with Sahaja (Yukti Thareja) who is studying medicine. But Sahaja's father (Murali Sharma) is against their marriage due to an issue involving Shaurya's village Rajavaram and the Rangabali center. Will Shaurya win his love? What really happened at Rangabali center? How is Parasuram (Shine Tom Chacko) involved in it forms the rest of the story.
Analysis:
After getting beaten by the villain, the hero's father tells his son that people don't remember the good we do for 20-30 years but talk only about the bad things. This applies for 'Rangabali' as well because the movie starts off well and entertains you throughout the first half. But the audience won't remember these good parts and point out at the way director narrated the story and faltered during the second half. The only thing that matters is the feeling with which the audience walk out of the theatres. If the feeling is bad, all the entertainment provided in the first half becomes of no use. Only the flaws get highlighted. 'Rangabali' which starts off well gets off track after a certain point and tests the patience of the audience.
Right from the beginning, Naga Shaurya called his movie was a commercial entertainer. The trailer too suggested the same and the makers did not claim that they are offering anything new. We expect the film to be an out-and-out entertainer and the makers become successful to an extent as well. The fun part satisfies the youth. Despite following the same commercial path right from the first scene, the comedy quotient keeps the audience entertained. Satya who generated a lot of buzz during the promotions by imitating a few journalists turned out to be the biggest highlight in the first half. The director showed him as a friend who gets happy looking at the grievances of other people. It is a funny version of SJ Suryah's character from 'Spyder'. Though the bad words and cringe moments surprise you at times, the film runs smoothly with funny scenes.
Pawan Basamsetti fell into the category of many directors who pass the time well in the first hour but stumbles badly when he had to focus on the story. The way in which he reveals why the movie is named 'Rangabali' and sets the conflict point has been dealt well. But the problem starts when the hero tries hard to change the famous center's name and keep his girlfriend's name instead. The director's attempt to create comedy in the second half fails badly as well. Shine Tom Chacko who impresses everyone as the menacing villain in 'Dasara' has been made into a joker in 'Rangabali'. There is no seriousness in his character which makes the entire conflict point appear very silly. The lack of emotion and drama makes it a tough watch.
Heroine has been presented in a very elegant way since the beginning but making her expose a lot in one particular song without any connection to her character may not impress the youth too. Despite justifying it by saying that it is hero's imagination, it doesn't fit in the proceedings. Sarath Kumar's character appears out of nowhere and the sudden shift in tonality makes the audience feel like they are watching another film. Hero becomes a side character after that the director tried to joke about it as well but it did not workout. Unnecessary scenes, bad episodes, a lag in the narration due to songs and silliness makes the film a tedious watch. The hero's plan to stop the villain too doesn't get liked by the audience as the inspiration from 'jathiratnalu' is clearly evident. All the chaos happening in the climax makes the audience feel completely disconnected. The good feel after the first half goes completely missing in the second half of 'Rangabali'.
Performances:
Naga Shaurya looked very handsome in this movie. Due to the confidence in the film, he appeared very energetic throughout. He did complete justice to his role and he had the best looks of his career in this movie. We don't know if it is the hero's plan or the director's vision but girls getting wowed after seeing Shaurya is completely justified in the movie. But all his efforts went into vain for a movie like 'Rangabali'. Yukti Thareja is fine as the heroine and her acting is just okay. As said before, she is presented in an uncomfortable manner in one song. The director failed to utilise Shine Tom Chacko perfectly. He did not show any speciality in his performance. Though Sarath Kumar did well in the limited screen time, his character did not have a lot of substance. Satya's comedy is a huge relief for the audience but the director did not use him properly in the latter half. Goparaju Ramana as hero's father did very well as expected and Murali Sharma sleepwalked through the role.
Technicians:
Music is the biggest minus of 'Rangabali'. Pawan Ch who proved his worth with 'Love Story' has given a huge shock to the audience. None of the songs get registered in our minds and one cannot believe that he was the same composer who worked on 'Love Story'. The background score is ok while Diwakar's cinematography is quite good. The visuals are colorful and the production values are amazing as well. New director Pawan Basamsetti had a good hero and a whole lot of comedians at his disposal but he failed to utilise them properly. Looking at a few scenes and dialogues, one can say that he knows the youth's pulse and his comedy sense is great too. But he did not prepare the story well and some dialogues have definitely crossed the line. The narration was never serious which made the film fall off the track. Only the director has to be blamed for the outcome.
Verdict: Rangabali - Damaged After A Half!
