Why Mahesh Babu-Mani Ratnam film was shelved?

However, Lots of speculations began doing rounds since them. One of the most popular version - Mani Ratnam planned the multistarrer with a budget of Rs 200 crore. He had not found Producer who could invest such a huge amount.
Writer Jayamohan worked with Mani Ratnam for the screenplay of 'Ponniyin Selvan'. In his recent interview, He disclosed the reasons that prompted Mani Ratnam to shelve the prestigious project. 'There were so many temples in Tamil Nadu. However, None of the Temple Authorities granted permission for shooting in the premises. So, Mani Ratnam thought of erecting a massive Temple set. The estimated cost of the set is Rs 50 crore. Hence, Mani dropped the idea as its not commercially viable then,' reveals the Writer.
