Actor Sanjay Dutt, sentenced to five years in prison in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, "is not a criminal or terrorist" but only behaved like an "immature child", Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said Sunday.

"Sanjay Dutt is not a criminal or terrorist. The atmosphere was bad in 1993 and he behaved like an immature child," Digvijay Singh told reporters here.

The congress general secretary said the actor was then under the impression that his father was being targeted for supporting the Muslim cause, so he may have done it.

"He made a mistake and paid the price for it by going to jail for 18 months," he said.

Press Council of India chairman Justice (retd) Markandey Katju and many other political parties have come in support of Sanjay Dutt.

Upholding the conviction of the actor under the Arms Act by a TADA (Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act) court, the Supreme Court Thursday sent him to five years in prison.

Sanjay Dutt was asked to surrender within four weeks.
