She Never Won That Award But Her Film Did!

It took 29 years for Telugu Film Industry to win an "acting" at National Level. 'Urvasi' Sharada won it first time for a Telugu film with Nimajjanam in 1978.

She won for Thulabaram, a Malayalam film in 1968, for the first time in the second year, when National Awards for 'Best Actress in a film', are introduced. Nargis Dutt won it in the first year in 1967 for Raat Aur Din.

Sharada again won the award for second time for another Malayalam film, Sita, in 1972. She won for the third time in 1978 for Telugu film. She is the first Telugu-born actress to win National award for her performance.

Waheeda Rehman, who is a Hyderabadi, won National Award in Best actress category in 1971, for Reshma, Hindi. She is the second Telugu born actress to win it.

Later, Lakshmi - Ganga - Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal (Tamil - 1976), Archana won twice back to back for Veedu (Tamil - 1987) and Daasi (Telugu - 1988), Vijayashanti for Karthavyam (1990) won National Awards.

So, only three Telugu films have won National awards in acting but there were Telugu born actresses who were getting recognition through other language films. Tabu, a Hyderabadi girl won it twice for Maachis (1996) and Chandini Bar (2001).

Sridevi won it for Mom (2017) and now, Keerthy Suresh, won the National Award for Mahanati (2018). The irony is that a Malayalee girl won National Award for acting as a Telugu actress, Savithri who never won the Award.

Yes, it is hard to digest that one of the biggest superstars and greatest actors of Indian Cinema, never won the award. The awards started in 1967 to recognize women with separate category and by that time, unfortunately, Savithri crossed her prime.

Still, we can see how a film about her and an actress acting as her, won an award. That is Savithri for you. This weekend, whoever are watching Mananati in her honour please watch Mayabazaar, Missamma, Naadi Aada Janme which we think are deserving candidates for National Awards for her performances from Telugu Cinema and there are several Tamil films too!
