Many Tamil actors are trying to establish a good market in Telugu. They are coming up with bilinguals that cater to both sets of audiences. Following the same route, supremely talented actor Dhanush has arrived with 'Sir' this Friday. Written and directed by Venky Atluri, the promos and songs have created a very good impression and knowing Dhanush's craze in Telugu states, there were good expectations on this flick. Let us see how it turned out.
Story:
Balagangadhar Tilak aka Balu (Dhanush) is a junior lecturer in a private college. Tripathi (Samuthirakani) who is the head of the junior college in which Balu works devises a strategy after he finds out that fee regulation rule by the government will affect the existence of his business. He adopts some government colleges which are losing their glory. As a part of his plan, he sends all the third grade lecturers in his colleges to government colleges. In this process, Balu ends up in Siripuram. He faces a lot of tough situations initially as there is not even a single student in the college. Balu convinces everyone and brings them back to the classes. What happens after that? How did Balu stop Tripathi's plan? These questions will be answered in the movie.
Analysis:
Nowadays, a message-oriented movie is considered out of fashion and lame. Showcasing the hero as a good person and giving a few good messages in the story is not being accepted by the audience. They are liking the stories of smugglers and gangsters instead. But Venky Atluri decided to tell the story of a teacher who goes above and beyond to teach the students of his village at all costs. A big star like Dhanush accepted this story and a production house like Sithara Entertainments decided to bankroll it by showing confidence in the director and his script. The team of 'Sir' proved that narrating a story in an honest fashion will definitely impress the movie lovers. This is not a crazy movie with a lot of twists. It does not have a new story and the screenplay lacks any surprises. But the connectable story, honest narration and a stellar performance by Dhanush along with strong emotions make this movie worthy.
'Sir' gives you the feeling that it is the South version of 'Super 30' where Hrithik Roshan plays the role of a teacher who coaches poor kids and turns them into IIT graduates. There are a lot of similarities in terms of story and the director makes some changes to suit the Southern style. He 'commercialized' a bit too. People who watched Venky's first three films will be surprised by 'Sir'. He is usually known for his youthful love stories but he penned a message-oriented story this time. He made an honest attempt in this film. Despite taking cinematic liberties, he did not go for too much of heroism and did not mix unnecessary masala elements that will spoil the story. This makes 'Sir' special despite all its shortcomings.
The character of Hyper Aadhi entertains you in the initial 30 minutes but when the story needs to turn serious, the director cuts his character immediately which shows his sincerity. He did not bring him in the second half for upping the entertainment quotient or bring another comic actor or include a song between the hero and heroine for commercial purposes. The initial comedy scenes are a part of the story and the melody too drives the movie forwards. After revealing the story in the trailer and showcasing the villain's intentions right at the beginning, the director did not have a lot of scope to surprise the viewers. The scenes too appear quite regular and do not offer anything new. But the director relies on emotions big time. He strikes a chord with the audience through emotional sequences. Though some of them are preachy, they are very relatable. The first half goes through smoothly without many hurdles.
After establishing the hero's main goal at the end of the first half, the second half takes the regular format where he faces a lot of hurdles and he passes through them one after the other. The melodrama went a bit over the board during the scene where the hero leaves the village and his students. It appears a bit lengthy but 'Sir' gets back on track immediately. Hero coming up with a new idea to teach kids and help them attain their goals is showcased in an interesting fashion. The depth and greatness of the hero's character are presented in a brilliant fashion during the pre-climax and climax portions. Venky Atluri scores major points in these scenes. The message he gives through these portions is quite impactful. Despite a predictable story and screenplay, 'Sir' manages to keep you hooked till the end. Despite giving a strong message, the team sugar-coated it perfectly.
Performances:
'Sir' is another example of how good an actor Dhanush is. He did a lot of complicated characters and larger-than-life roles in his career which entertained the audience but people mostly connected with him when he played a common man's role. 'Raghuvaran Btech', 'Thiru' and a few others showcase the amount of relatability he brings into the character. You can find yourself in his performance. He appears as a common man once again in 'Sir'. But he portrayed an ordinary man's role in an extraordinary fashion. He owned the character of Balu and easily managed to touch the hearts of viewers. He was fantastic in heroic scenes and flawless in emotional scenes. It is a one-man show from him and there is no denying this fact.
Samyuktha Menon is fine in her brief role. Her acting is convincing in a few scenes but there were moments when she put on a blank face. Samuthirakani did not have much to do in this movie. The actors who did the role of students were amazing. Saikumar showcased his experience while seasoned actor Tanikella Bharani gave an honest performance as always.
Technicians:
GV Prakash Kumar is the hero of 'Sir' behind the screen. 'Mastaaru Mastaaru' song stands out and the rest of the songs run with the flow of the movie perfectly. His background score is the backbone of this movie. His work during the emotional scenes pulls your heartstrings while his BGM in hero elevation scenes gives you goosebumps. Yuvaraj's cinematography is very natural and suited the earthy nature of the movie. The production values are quite good and the editing is crisp and adequate.
Venky Atluri rediscovered himself both as a writer and director. One cannot believe that he made 'Sir' after watching his first three movies. His sincerity in writing a message-oriented film and making it without polluting it with too many commercial aspects should be appreciated. He seems to have gotten inspired from 'Super 30' and took a few liberties too but he showcased his class both as a writer and director with 'Sir'.
