Supreme Court calls for a mechanism to screen OTT content, directs Center

Since the nationwide lockdown has been imposed in the country to tackle the pandemic outbreak, everything was shut be it the workplace, educational institutions, theaters, and other public gatherings.
With no source of entertainment, the consumers started spending more time on Over-the-top(OTT) platforms. While the existing platforms saw a massive rise in consumers, several new platforms like Aha were launched.
Unlike the theatres, OTT platforms don't have any restrictions on the content that appears on the platforms. Several series like Mirzapur have used foul language while a few series are accused of hurting religious sentiments.
The Amazon Prime Video's originals Tandav landed in controversy for allegedly hurting Hindu sentiments. The issue even reached the Supreme Court on Thursday.
While hearing the case, the country's top court made sensational comments on the content that is streamed on these apps. A constitutional bench led by Justice Ashok Bhushan heard the petition.
The bench maintained that few OTT platforms at times show pornographic content on the platforms and called for a mechanism to screen that content that appears on the platforms.
With a majority of houses across the nation having access to smartphones and electronic devices, even the children in their houses are able to watch this content which is an area of content.
