'Families' Affecting Telugu Theatrical Releases
By: Tupaki Desk | 10 Aug 2021 3:53 PM GMTSR Kalyanamandapam, which released last weekend is doing pretty well at the box office despite the fact that it had garnered mixed reviews on its opening day. The film is registering good box office returns and it is being termed the first big hit after the Covid second wave The film is indeed proving that Telugu audiences are in fact ready to step out to watch new releases in theaters. But the considerable aspect is that SR Kalyanamandapam is a low-investment project. The film can enter the profits zone even if it collects as much as Rs 5 crores. But that won't be the case with big-ticket and even mid-range films for that case.
Mid-range films like Nani's Tuck Jagadish and Naga Chaitanya's Love Story are up for release but the makers of neither of these films are willing to release them in theaters. The decisive factor that is coming into play is 'family' audiences. Fans flock to theaters in the opening weekend and give big-ticket films a strong start at the box office. But family audiences are the ones who give films a prolonged run at the box office. Only with the patronage from family audiences can Telugu films post good numbers in their overall theatrical runs.
Now, the makers of both Tuck Jagadish and Love Story are aware that these two films are aimed at family audiences. However, family audiences are not willing to step out to watch films in theaters just yet. Since the onset of the Covid pandemic, many families across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have lost their near and dear ones. They are greatly scared of the Covid pandemic now and rightly so. Watching new films in theaters would be the last thing on their to-do list now, given the fact that they will have to risk potential Covid transmission if they step out to watch films in theaters.
Without family audience, films like Love Story and Tuck Jagadish might struggle to mint big bucks at the box office. With all this in mind, the makers of both these films are opting for direct to digital release.
