Here is the actual story which shook the Nation in late 50s & early 60s…
Kamas Maneckshaw Nanavati, an Indian Naval Officer, used to live in Mumbai with his English wife Sylvia and two children. Sylvia entered into an extra-marital affair with Nanavati's Friend Prem Ahuja and she wanted to marry him after separation with her husband. When Sylvia sought Divorce, Nanavati refuses and that's when she reveals to him about her affair. Then, Nanavati dropped his wife and children at a movie theatre and went to Prem Ahuja's office by carrying his Gun. As Ahuja wasn't there, He then went to his House and asked him if he will marry & look after his children. When Ahuja refused, Nanavati shot him thrice and surrendered before the police.
Known to be upright and patriotic Naval Officer, Nanavati had the sympathies of the jury and declared him as not guilt. Prem Ahuja's sister Mamie Ahuja hired Ram Jetmalani, who was a young lawyer then, to assist the Prosecution. The trail court judge referred the matter to the High Court where Nanavati was sentenced to life imprisonment. Nanavati moved Supreme Court but he didn't receive any relief.
Bombay Governor Vijayalakshmi Pandit (PM Jawaharlal Nehru's Sister) received the mercy petition filed by Sindhi leader Bhai Pratap in March 1962. She has pardoned Nanavati and given directions to Ram Jetmalani to convince Mamie Ahuja to approve it. Finally, Ram Jetmalani was successful in doing so and he shot to fame.
Nanavati shifted his base to Canada after being pardoned in 1962. He lived there with his wife and children. He passed away in the year 2003. Sylvia is still alive.
In 'Rustom', Akshay Kumar, Ileana and Esha Gupta will be seen reprising the roles of Nanavati, Sylvia and Mamie Ahuja respectively.
