Why is Bollywood missing great directors?

Karan Johar with Shah Rukh Khan created sensational history in his debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Post that Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham became even bigger hit. Post that he sticked to his comfortable genre but started producing different genres. Now, he is asking Bollywood directors to learn from South. What really changed?

South Indian Cinema has always been rooted to belief system of highlighting action stars and heroes with big audience pull. Action stars would get huge budgets and openings. Producers want to invest more on them and a director who can give good action blocks with decent content is revered.

In Hindi Cinema, the director who can deliver niche films are getting more priority these days. Big action stars like Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar are not finding perfect action filmmakers.

Either they are remaking South films or sticking to niche content. With directors who are not equipped to handle the emotions that South Indian directors could, these stars are either failing or delivering moderate successes.

Tiger Shroff who has all the makings to become a good action hero is over dependent on remakes as he is not finding original powerful makers. Rohit Shetty too made a name from remakes but his style is unique.

Other than him Nitesh Tiwari, Raj Kumar Hirani who gave big hits don't really prefer action sequences. Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Kabir Khan have been hit & miss with their recent films. Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra are also making only one genre films or waiting for new breed to come up with exciting content.

The death of new talent that can mix local flavor with high end action set pieces that Indian Cinema stands for is missing badly. Hence, even Hollywood scoring but Bollywood is reeling under the pump.

For the industry to come back and deliver hits they need Shah Rukh Khan's long awaited come back film Pathan to release. The movie is a stylish action flick. Prior to that Salman Khan should also find a hit with his next release and Aamir Khan with Laal Singh Chadda.

The main problem with today's directors is that they try to repeat and learn from niche movies of Western Cinema but forget our roots. Ranveer Singh, Raveena Tandon, Kangana Ranaut and many others are stating the same too.

They need to learn from Directors like Prashanth Neel and Rajamouli who are balancing vision with content. Or at least reimagine simple stories in different ways to give new experience.
