Talks of a sequel recently surfaced when director Vashishta Mallidi, known for Bimbisara, confirmed that he had written a script and even approached Rajinikanth. The project was shaping up under the banner of Dil Raju. It had all the ingredients: a legendary lead, a director on the rise, and a story built on nostalgia. Vashishta revealed that Rajinikanth responded positively to the idea of revisiting Baasha. That alone was enough to excite longtime fans. But it didn’t go beyond that.

Despite the green light from Rajinikanth, Vashishta made a call that not many expected, he shelved the project. “Everything was set, but I wasn’t fully convinced with the script,” he admitted in a recent interview. “If the story doesn’t feel right, even the biggest names can’t save it.” That kind of decision, especially when such a massive opportunity is involved, is rare in the industry.
