Bollywood Owns These South Films For A Reason
When a film didn’t work at the box office, especially in the northern hinterlands, they surely wrote off that film as a South film that failed to click.
By: Shanaz B Syed | 29 Jun 2026 4:59 PM ISTWhen a film didn’t work at the box office, especially in the northern hinterlands, they surely wrote off that film as a South film that failed to click. In recent times, a huge amount has been written about movies like Raja Saab in the same way. Then came a film like Peddi, which worked in Telugu states but didn’t move audiences to theatres in the north, and Bollywood says that non-local nativity isn’t working in Hindi states now.
Now come movies like KGF and Pushpa, and both have strong South Indian nativity, but nothing connected to the Hindi arena. However, as the first two parts of these movies are gigantic blockbusters in the Bollywood area, collecting more than what they have collected in their original language in the original states, the Bollywood media says that they are big-ticket Hindi movies. Some national media folks are writing that these are the most-awaited Hindi movie sequels when talking about Pushpa and KGF now.
Well, that’s what they say, if a film wins, then we own it like ours, and if it fails to click, we wouldn’t even go near it. This is the methodology that has existed for a long time in Bollywood, and that’s the reason many South films never went to release their movies in Mumbai and up north. However, Baahubali has changed the trend now the exhibitors in the North are eagerly waiting for Telugu and Kannada movie dubs such that they could see large profits.
