It can’t be denied that Christopher Nolan is possibly the generational film maker in world cinema at this moment, and the kind of legacy that he is building for himself is truly phenomenal. He is possibly the greatest director of this generation, and that is a matter of fact.

However, when we compare the strategic and ideological differences between Indian films and certain Christopher Nolan films, there is a lot to look forward to here.

Hollywood actor Tom Holland, who is famous as Spiderman and currently doing a crucial role in Nolan’s Odyssey which is releasing on July 17, has made an interesting comment. He said every single frame and artwork in Christopher Nolan films is smaller than the emotion that is being driven. He gave the implication that no one is more focused on human emotions and narration, rather than grand film making and set pieces.

To put that into perspective, Indian films depend a lot on these set pieces and dance numbers in order to create the commercial aspect. There are times when these action episodes and set dances dominate the whole emotion of the film, in order to provide some commercial relief to the audience.

At the end of the day, it is the sensibility of the audience that would decide the style of film making, and the same would be associated with Indian films as well. Hear the audience, expect loud comedy, and beautiful dance pieces in sets. This could be the reason why domestic Indian film makers follow this strategy.

But in Hollywood, the entire focus will be kept on drama and visual storytelling, which is the reason why Christopher Nolan has a different style of presenting his stories.

We can’t generalise and say Indian film making is inferior to that of Christopher Nolan, because this is the sensibility here. But at the same time, section of Indian audience also enjoy Christopher Nolan kind of films, which is perfectly acceptable and understandable as well.
