Well known music composer GV Prakash Kumar and talented actress Aishwarya Rajesh have arrived with a romantic comedy that deals with an interesting topic. The movie is titled 'deAr' and the trailer attracted the movie lovers. It was released in Tamil yesterday and came to the Telugu states on Friday. Let us see how the movie turned out.

Story:

Arun (GV Prakash Kumar) is a promising journalist who is a news reader for now but aims to make it big in the field of journalism. He gets married to Deepika (Aishwarya Rajesh) everything looks fine till the first night where Arun finds out about the sleeping issue of Deepika. Arun is a very light sleeper and Deepika has sleep apnea and snores loudly. This creates problems in their marriage. Will Arun get over this issue and accept Deepika? What happens when they both are tested to their limits? Answers to these questions forms the crux of the story.

Analysis:

Writing romantic comedies is not an easy task. From the eagle's view, it looks like a simple story that needs a good hero and heroine along with good songs. But the characters need to be properly written for the viewers to relate to them. The love story has to be either something they connect to or fantasize about. The screenplay should be focused on the main point and not go sideways. 'DeAr' has a few good moments but the above-mentioned rules is where the film faltered. Though the plot initial reminds us of 'Good Night', the makers made sure that the proceedings are not similar.

The movie starts off on a decent note and the conflict point is established in quick succession without dragging too much. The fun scenes are decent enough and things move on quickly. But the problem is that the audience do not get much time to know about the characters. Things happen one after the other. The story should have focused more on the main couple but it gets shifted in the second half which doesn't work well with the audience. The director tried to narrate both the stories but things don't work out as he desired. But there are some moments that touch you and those sparks of brilliances makes you sit throughout. Also, it is the hero and heroine who carry the film on their shoulders with their performance. Especially, Aishwarya Rajesh did amazingly well and conveyed a lot of emotions like anger, sadness and sorrow in a very convincing manner.

The idea of the hero having a male friend and a female friend is also good as he gets to listen to both perspectives. The movie deals with an important point too but having the regular commercial tropes like a hero about women while getting drunk is quite routine. The makers also took some digs at feminism which may or may not work for the audience. The fun scenes, compelling performances from hero, heroine and the supporting cast and a few good moments are the biggest plus points of this movie while the bumpy narration and lack of emotional depth in the characters play the spoilsport. It is not a bad film but 'DeAr' could have been even better.

Performances:

GV Prakash looks convincing as the boy-next-door and delivers a decent performance. He is good in the comedy scenes but his acting looks quite ordinary during the emotional scenes. He shared a very good chemistry with Aishwarya Rajesh and definitely shows improvement from his previous acting ventures.

Aishwarya Rajesh is the heart and soul of the movie. She is a very good performer and she proves it yet again. She effortlessly does this role and portrays all the emotions in a convincing manner. She makes you laugh and gets you emotional at places as well. Rohini as the hero's mother does an amazing job. The rest of the actors like Kaali Venkat, Thalaivasal Vijay, Nandini and others too did their part well though some of their roles are undercooked.

Technicians:

Music by GV Prakash Kumar is trendy. It suited the style and theme of the movie. The songs are not catchy but go with the flow smoothly. However, he failed to elevate the emotional moments with his music. The background music is just okay. The camera work is colorful. It is adequate for the story requirement and the visuals looked fine onscreen. The production values are good but the editing could have been crisper towards the later half.

Anand Ravichandran who wrote and directed the film has excelled in moments. The entertainment is good at places and the emotions work out to an extent but not enough time is spent on character development. His narration is bumpy with a lot of ups and downs. He delivers an okay product but it had more potential that was left untapped.

Verdict: 'deAr' - Quirky But Lacks Emotional Depth!

Rating: 2.25/5
