One of the biggest blockbusters in the history of Indian cinema was registered recently in the form of Dhurandhar 2. While this film has been going on a pretty strong run at the Hindi box office, that is not necessarily reflecting in the South Indian states.

Even with its massive scale and intense pre-release hype, Dhurandhar 2 has struggled to make a meaningful impact in the South, despite being dubbed in regional languages.

Unlike the Hindi belt, where Bollywood’s star power often guarantees attention regardless of content, Southern audiences display a fierce loyalty to their local stars. Dubbed versions rarely capture the same cultural resonance or emotional connection, leaving even high-profile Bollywood releases struggling to penetrate these markets.

This divide highlights a deeper issue in contemporary Bollywood. Many stars and creators have increasingly lost touch with the general audience, producing films and narratives that largely appeal to a niche segment urban elites, global NRIs, and those already deeply invested in Bollywood culture.

The broader masses, who once formed the backbone of box office success, now find themselves disconnected from this content.

In contrast, Northern audiences, too, are no longer as captivated by star-driven hype alone. The traditional stardom factor is fading, as a cultural renaissance and greater exposure to international films, series, and digital content have reshaped tastes.

Viewers now seek substance over spectacle, narratives that resonate with their lived experiences, and storytelling that matches global standards.

Dhurandhar2’s limited Southern traction is not just a matter of language but a reflection of a shifting cinematic landscape—one where old formulas no longer guarantee universal appeal.
