The Hindi film Homebound has been chosen as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars. Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, the movie features Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in leading roles.

Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, the film had a disappointing start at the box office. According to trade reports, Homebound earned only Rs. 30 lakhs on its opening day. Experts believe the limited awareness among audiences and the absence of a strong promotional campaign contributed to its poor opening, even though it stars well-known actors.

Before its theatrical release, Homebound was showcased at major international film festivals. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, earning praise for its story and performances.

The movie is inspired by journalist Basharat Peer’s article “A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Death Beside the Highway.” It explores the childhood friendship between a Muslim boy and a Dalit boy, both striving to secure a police job that promises dignity and respect—something their families were historically denied due to societal prejudices.

Homebound has strong backing from the film industry. Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese is the executive producer, while prominent figures like Karan Johar and Adar Poonawalla support the project. This collaboration adds credibility and international recognition to the film.

Although the movie brings a socially relevant narrative and has received critical appreciation, its box office performance highlights the challenge of drawing audiences without extensive marketing. Industry insiders suggest that films like Homebound, which focus on meaningful storytelling rather than commercial elements, often struggle initially despite their artistic value.

For Telugu cinema fans, the film is also generating interest online, with discussions about its story and performances spreading on social media. Viewers are curious about its unique portrayal of friendship, caste dynamics, and ambition during challenging times.

Homebound shows that while critical acclaim and festival recognition are important, connecting with audiences through awareness and promotions is crucial for box office success. With time, the film may gain more attention and find its audience beyond the opening day numbers.
