By: Shanaz B Syed | 6 Dec 2025 3:49 PM ISTHyderabad used to have a famous IMAX at Prasads Multiplex Hyderabad, which opened back in 2003. It was India’s first 70mm IMAX and one of the biggest in the world. But around 2014-2015, it stopped showing true IMAX films. Upgrading to digital and laser formats was expensive, and the movie industry was moving toward digital anyway. These days, Prasads still has a giant screen, often called PCX, but technically there’s no official IMAX in the city.
Now, whispers are floating around that Hyderabad could get a real IMAX theatre again. Perfect timing, too, with big films like Ramayana and Varanasi on the way. Both shot in full IMAX, both made for that jaw-dropping, immersive experience. Moviegoers here have missed it for years. The buzz is real. No official date yet, but people are already talking.
Across India, IMAX screens mostly live in big cities, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, you name it. Hyderabad finally joining that list would be huge. Imagine seeing a blockbuster the way it’s meant to be seen, giant screen, booming sound, the whole vibe. Fans are itching for it.
With so many films now being made for IMAX, this comeback couldn’t have come at a better time. Everyone’s waiting, fingers crossed, hoping the city will get that big-screen thrill back.
