Celebrities Lose Millions Overnight - What’s Happening?
The bigger the number, the bigger the star power, is what is considered. But now, one sudden Instagram cleanup has shaken that illusion completely.
By: Shanaz B Syed | 7 May 2026 6:21 PM ISTFor years, Instagram follower counts became a status symbol. While Indian celebrities are talking about 20 million, 30 million, and 50 million, there are Hollywood celebrities who have 100 million, 200 million, 300 million, and more followers. The bigger the number, the bigger the star power, is what is considered. But now, one sudden Instagram cleanup has shaken that illusion completely.
Reports are coming up that Meta has begun aggressively removing bot accounts, spam profiles, inactive users, and artificially inflated followers on Instagram. Guess what, even the world’s biggest celebrities were hit hard with this. Kylie Jenner reportedly lost over 14 million followers. Cristiano Ronaldo saw nearly 8 million disappear. Names like Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Beyoncé and Justin Bieber were also affected big time. Coming to Indian celebs, the likes of Virat Kohli, Priyanka Chopra and several Bollywood stars reportedly saw huge drops in followers after the purge.
Online discussions on Reddit mentioned that accounts like Shraddha Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt are seeing visible fluctuations. The impact of this is massive as social media is already calling it “The Great Purge of 2026”. But honestly, this isn’t really about celebrities “buying followers”. When accounts become globally massive, bots naturally follow them too in order to appear authentic. Spam accounts usually attach themselves to the biggest profiles on the platform. So when Instagram wipes fake accounts, the largest celebrity pages naturally lose millions instantly.
