Five Telugu films were hoping to be selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars, but none of them made it. The movies in the race were Pushpa 2, Kannappa, Gandhi Thatha Chettu, Kuberaa, and Sankranthi Ki Vastunnam. All five were seen as strong contenders, but the jury decided to go with a Hindi film instead.
The chosen film is Homebound, starring Jahnvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, and Vishal Jethwa. The story is about two childhood friends from a small village in North India.
They dream of becoming police officers, but their journey is full of challenges. As hardships test them, their friendship is pushed to its limits. The film is said to mix emotions, realism, and strong storytelling, which may have convinced the jury to select it.
While Telugu audiences were disappointed that none of their films were chosen, this is not uncommon. The Oscar committee often gives importance to movies with unique storytelling, emotional depth, and cultural themes rather than just big commercial hits.
Even though Telugu films are enjoying huge success in India and overseas, the selection shows that critical and artistic value is still a key factor in deciding India’s entry for the Oscars.
