Janhvi Kapoor was just a teenager when she stood beside her mother, Sridevi, at a press event in 2012. A journalist asked her to speak in Hindi, and she hesitated. Still in school and not used to public speaking, she tried, stumbled, and quickly handed the mic back. Sridevi, in a light-hearted moment, joked that she often bullies Janhvi for her Hindi. She even mimicked her daughter’s way of speaking. The crowd laughed. Janhvi smiled along. But the awkwardness didn’t disappear.

That short clip has resurfaced online, and it hits differently now. What looked like a playful moment showed something more raw, a young girl feeling out of place, struggling with language in front of cameras. Janhvi later admitted she was bullied for her Hindi, both publicly and privately. And while Sridevi’s tease may have been casual, it added to the pile of self-doubt Janhvi carried early on.

People saw her debut in Dhadak as an easy launchpad, but what they didn’t see was the pressure behind it, expectations, comparisons, and the weight of her surname. Janhvi didn’t just want to be accepted; she wanted space to learn, to fail, and to be seen for herself, not just as Sridevi’s daughter. And stumbling in Hindi became one of those marks she couldn’t shake off quickly.

Today, Janhvi isn’t trying to fix the past, she’s just moving forward. With films like Param Sundari, Peddi, and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, she’s putting in the work, not the polish. The Hindi is better. The confidence is stronger. But more than that, she’s stopped trying to be perfect. And that shift is where her real growth shows.
