Kanthara Chapter 1: Where Is The Hype?
This success naturally raised huge expectations for the prequel, Kantara: Chapter-1. Backed by Hombale Films with a big budget and directed by Rishab Shetty
By: Tupaki Desk | 30 Sept 2025 5:54 PM ISTGenerally, in the case of franchise films, the second and subsequent parts, tend to enjoy more anticipation and hype. But that is not exactly the case with Kantara, which is struggling to generate the kind of anticipation that is expected for a sequel for a blockbuster film.
Kannada film Kantara created history three years ago, surprising everyone with its massive success. Released with low expectations, it became a blockbuster in Kannada and later spread to Telugu, Hindi, and Tamil audiences, eventually earning over ₹400 crores worldwide.
This success naturally raised huge expectations for the prequel, Kantara: Chapter-1. Backed by Hombale Films with a big budget and directed by Rishab Shetty, the film carried strong hype until release time.
However, the trailer received a mixed response. Though visually grand, many felt the story looked formulaic and lacked the surprise factor that made the first film special. Despite this, trade experts initially predicted strong bookings. But reality has been different.
In Karnataka, advance bookings are decent, but in other regions, particularly in Hindi-speaking markets, the response has been dull. Unlike South audiences, Hindi viewers usually don’t rush for advance bookings, but at least a moderate trend was expected. Instead, ticket sales have been very weak.
In Telugu states, bookings are yet to start, and some negativity has crept in due to ticket pricing and controversies. Overall, the much-anticipated hype seems to be fading, leaving uncertainty about how Kantara: Chapter-1 will perform.
