In most of the cases, someone lights the fire, and someone else gets burned. That is exactly what seems to be happening with Suriya’s Karuppu, which is Veerabhadrudu in Telugu, which has emerged as one of the biggest successes of Tamil cinema this year. The film is marching towards the ₹300 crore mark worldwide and has given Suriya the blockbuster comeback he desperately needed. However, at these happy times, some comments made by the film’s director and editor kickstarted a new row.

Director RJ Balaji recently revealed that he had first narrated the story of Karuppu to Taml Nadu’s present-day CM, Joseph Vijay. He felt that the film would have been a perfect farewell project if Vijay had chosen to do it before entering politics. While this itself is an unwanted statement, next one came from the editor of the film, Kalaivanan. If Vijay had acted in Karuppu, the film would have gone to another level and become an even bigger blast at the box office, the Editor said. These two statements did not go down well with Suriya fans. They feel that these comments are fuelling the talk that Suriya got the film only because Vijay rejected it. Social media immediately turned it into a fan war, with debates breaking out.

Interestingly, Suriya's simple message about spreading love and positivity, which he posted on social media, felt like an answer to this. Though he never mentioned the controversy, fans are connecting the timing of his tweet to the ongoing discussion on social media. Realising that things were getting out of hand, Kalaivanan later clarified that his comments were misunderstood, while RJ Balaji repeatedly described Suriya as someone who changed his life and career.

Honestly, after you score a success, you should carefully chose the words you utter. Else, everything feels burned.
